PROCESS

Smith begins each painting as a carefully constructed design created with architectural tools. Every composition is built through measured forms and structured geometry, but for her, these shapes extend far beyond mathematics — carrying their own meaning, energy, and visual language.

A square can create a sense of stability and grounding. A triangle introduces movement and direction. A circle brings softness, openness, and flow. As these forms interact, they create a quiet dialogue within the painting itself — a balance of tension, rhythm, and harmony.

Once the composition is complete, color takes over — Smith’s favorite part of the process. She often begins with a single color that establishes the emotional tone of the piece. From there, the palette evolves intuitively, with each color responding to the next, pushing and pulling against one another until the painting settles into its own distinct voice.

Recently, Smith completed a full renovation of her home studio — a space designed entirely around creativity, light, and the daily rhythm of making art. What was once an unfinished basement has been transformed into a bright, modern working studio where she can paint on a larger scale, experiment freely, and fully immerse herself in the creative process. Creating this space was about more than renovation; it was about building an environment that reflects the energy of the work itself: vibrant, intentional, optimistic, and full of possibility.
